Nearly 200 recreation residences have been lost so far in 2021, 180 of which were in the Lake Tahoe area. Cabin owners must be vigilant about brush clearance and fire fuel reduction in their own area.

During the fall, fire risks from drought, low humidity, dead trees, and brush caused the Forest Service to close all forest lands to chain saws and chippers. Later, Mother Nature put a blanket of snow on the ground, further delaying any clearance of dead trees, limbs, and brush.
